ThreatWing Tools walkthrough
Your first SSH connection
Have permission to use the host, its address and port, your account details, and a host-key fingerprint obtained from the owner through a trusted channel.
Add the host
Open Connect → Add Host. Select SSH, enter the address and port, and choose a name you will recognize.
Choose authentication
Select your password or supported Ed25519/P-256 key. Store secrets in Keychain, never in the profile name or notes.
Check the route
Review direct or proxy routing and the final address. Cancel if it differs from the host you are allowed to access.
Compare the fingerprint
Compare the complete SHA-256 host-key fingerprint with the value supplied by the owner. Reject any mismatch. A changed key on a later connection also needs the owner’s confirmation.
Open the terminal
Check that the host and account are correct before making changes. Read generated or saved commands before approving them; high or unknown risk needs a second confirmation.
Close the session
Exit the shell and close the connection. Terminal output is held in memory rather than saved in profile history. Keep only the records your task requires.
If the connection fails
- Timeout
- Check the route, port, and firewall with the owner.
- Authentication failed
- Check the username and chosen credential. Do not repeatedly guess passwords.
- Host key changed
- Stop and verify the new fingerprint. Deleting the warning does not establish that the host is safe.
- Key unavailable
- Unlock the device and complete the key’s required Face ID, Touch ID, or device authentication.
